Aviation Bodies


The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale is the world's air sports federation. It is a non-governmental and non-profit making international organisation with the basic aim of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide. Ireland is one of the 90 member countries.

The Commission Internationale d'Aerostation is the International representative body of ballooning within the FAI. It's aim is to promote the work of the FAI/CIA and develop the sport of aerostation amongst balloonists and the general public. It formulates rules governing World and European events for gas balloons, hot air balloons and airships, and homologates world records.

The National Aero Club of Ireland is the representative body of all sport aviation in Ireland and is affiliated to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). As the National Aero Club it co-ordinates representation of Irish aviators at International competitions. 


The Dublin Ballooning Club was founded in 1968 and is the only active ballooning club in Ireland. It has one balloon which is used for training and routine flying. There are twenty five members in the club of whom five are pilots. Of these four operate their own balloons.
